2009 chevrolet traverse review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sensible new alternative to the traditional suv. introductionthe chevrolet traverse is one of a new generation of large crossover suvs making big, clunky, truck-based suvs practically obsolete, at least when it comes to moving people and cargo. More stylish than minivans and far more fuel and space efficient than truck-based suvs, crossovers like the traverse are excellent family vehicles.  the chevy traverse shares its powertrain and platform with the buick enclave, gmc acadia and saturn outlook. It handles a more like a family sedan than a chevy tahoe. The steering is direct and responsive, if light, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The ride is comfortable and much more stable than that of large suvs, which can often bound and lean. The traverse is large, though, so it can be bulky in parking lot and parallel parking maneuvers.  power is more than adequate. The traverse comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 that moves it ably from a stop and provides decent passing punch. It makes 281 horsepower or 288 with the available dual exhaust system. The traverse comes standard with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Given the traverse's spacious interior and eight-passenger capacity, the fuel economy is quite good. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to open up a generous cargo area. Even with all the seats up, there is enough room behind the third row for a week's worth of groceries. And an available power liftgate makes it easy to access those groceries.  the controls are easy to reach and operate. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. Room in the first and second rows is plentiful, and the third row is bigger than most and is even useful for adults. It's much more pleasant to drive than those vehicles, thanks to dramatically improved ride and handling. Plus, it gets better mileage and is more space efficient on the inside. In short, the chevy traverse is an excellent family vehicle. lineupthe 2009 chevrolet traverse is offered in ls, lt (1lt, 2lt), and ltz trim levels, each with front-wheel drive (2wd) or all-wheel drive (awd). Ls and lt models have a 281-horsepower 3. 6-liter v6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Other options include a cargo convenience package 130) with a rear cargo cover and cargo net; a trailering package 495) with a heavy-duty engine cooler and a trailer hitch; a two-panel sunroof 1400) with a fixed rear panel; a dvd rear entertainment system 2355 for 1lt, $1470 for 2lt, $1295 for ltz) that includes the bose sound system, rear audio controls, and a 110-volt outlet; a dual-screen rear dvd entertainment system 1930); a second-row center console 300); side steps 630); and a roof rack 210).  safety features include dual front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitor, traction control and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are optional. walkaroundchevrolet says the traverse is a midsize crossover suv, but it's bigger than even its midsize truck-based competitors and is only slightly shorter than a chevy tahoe full-size suv.  the traverse shares its architecture with the buick enclave, gmc acadia, and saturn outlook, and they're all based on gm's lambda platform.  though large, the traverse trades the bold and upright looks of traditional truck-based suvs for a softer, sleeker, more modern look.  up front, the traverse features an attractive version of chevrolet's split grille. The headlights start next to the grille and wrap around the front fenders. Horizontal fog lights mirror the headlights about six inches lower. A black air dam below the grille gives the front end a dark lower face. A peak at the center of the hood continues down through the grille and fascia, adding a touch of character.  from the side, the traverse appears to have short overhangs for an suv. The window line rises to the rear and that angle increases at the rear windows. A character line is located about a third of the way up each door, and the black front fascia is picked up along the sides by black plastic over the rocker panels. Large wheels and tires keep everything in proportion. Up top, the traverse has black roof rails and an available two-panel sunroof with a fixed rear panel and an opening front panel.  at the rear, the traverse features dark tailgate glass that dips down toward the center. The tailgate lifts up and does not have separate opening glass. The center peak from the front is repeated here, as is the black lower fascia treatment. The total design is well thought out, smooth and stylish. interiorinside, the chevy traverse makes great use of its best-in-class space. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive, with lots of head and leg room.  the second-row bench seat fits three adults easily and there is plenty of head and leg room. With the second-row captain's chairs, there is a handy walkthrough to the third row. Three children can ride comfortably in the third row, and there is also enough head and leg room for two adults to fit back there. Adults won't be comfortable during long trips, though, because the seat cushions are set too low.  in terms of cargo space, the traverse has more room behind the third-row seat (19. 7 cubic feet) than in any midsize suv, and gm provides a handy, though shallow, under-floor bin. With the second and third rows folded down, cargo volume is an impressive 116. 4 cubic feet, near the top of the class and almost eight cubic feet more than in the full-size tahoe. Those two rear rows fold easily, each with the flick of a lever, creating a nearly flat load floor. A strap on each section of the split third-row bench makes it easy to pull the seatbacks upright from the tailgate area. An available power rear liftgate also eases access to the cargo area.  getting in and out is easy because the traverse sits lower than traditional truck-based suvs. Still, the driver is perched higher than in a car and therefore has a clear view of the road ahead. Visibility to the front is generally good, but the traverse is bigger than it feels, so it can be tough to see over the driver's right shoulder and objects immediately behind can hide. With this in mind, it makes sense to get the rearview camera. Not only does it add an element of safety, helping avoid the tragic mistake of backing over a child, it also proves to be highly useful in everyday parking situations, making maneuvering in tight quarters easier and quicker.  up front, the driver is surrounded by an attractively designed dashboard that has nice graining but uses more hard plastics than customers might expect for a $30,000 vehicle. The instrument cluster has two deep-set pods with electroluminescent gauges on a black background. It's easy to read and never washes o.

2013 dodge avenger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Midsize sedan is powerful, comfortable. introductionthe dodge avenger is an honest, straightforward sedan at a good price. In certain respects it's less sophisticated than some competitors, but it's powerful, comfortable and reasonably economical to operate. It's also quiet and pleasant to drive.  avenger was launched as a 2008 model. A thorough update for the 2011 model year made the avenger much more competitive in key areas. Avenger r/t joined the lineup for 2012. Avenger carries over to 2013 unchanged.  dodge calls the avenger america's most affordable mid-size sedan, and based on current retail prices, we can't disagree. Yet the avenger isn't just selling price. We might call it a mid-size package with compact value.  the 2008 avenger appeared looking like a scaled-down version of the hot-selling, full-size dodge charger. Since then, the charger has moved on to a new look, while the avenger has remained mostly unchanged. It's still clean, tightly creased and not bad looking, but without the more dramatic proportions of the bigger car it doesn't stand out. Its basic visual impact is retrograde.  the cabin contributes to a relaxing, pleasant driving experience. The quality of the interior materials isn't the best in the class, but the avenger is comfortable and the controls are intuitive and easy to use.  avenger se retails for hundreds of dollars less than the next competitive mid-size sedan, and it comes well equipped. With the 4-speed automatic transmission, the avenger se is epa-rated at 21/30 mpg city/highway. The price is thousands less than other mid-size v6s, yet it's the most powerful v6 in its class. Epa ratings are 19/29 mpg.  avenger r/t comes with the v6, a sports suspension and racy stripes and interior treatment. Loaded with navigation and the boston acoustics audio upgrade, an avenger r/t barely cracks $27,000.  the avenger chassis is shared with the chrysler 200, which was designed to be a convertible as well as a sedan, so the chassis is stiff and strong. Dodge aced the suspension, and both ride quality and cornering response are excellent, benefits of that rigid chassis. V6 is optional 1,795). Sxt options include media center with 6. 5-inch touch screen, 40gb hard-disc drive, navigation and sirius services 995); power sunroof 995); cold weather group with heated front seats and remote start 295); chromed wheels 395). A new blacktop package 595) combines a body-color grille with a black headlamp bezels, a trunk spoiler, and 18-inch black-painted aluminum wheels.  avenger r/t 25,495) is the sport model, with the v6, firmer suspension, leather-bolstered sport seats and unique graphics inside and out. It also comes with foglights, the cold weather package, the media center, boston acoustics audio, and other goodies. However, it does not stand out and gets lost among all the mid-size sedans.  avenger's shape suggests the 2006-10 charger, especially at the hips and roofline, but doesn't inspire like the charger does. Its clean look is emphasized by the lack of cladding or ding strips on the sides and body-colored door handles and mirrors (except on the base se). The bumpers, front and rear, are smooth. The black egg-crate grille adds visual interest.  the crosshair grille is a dodge trademark, and the avenger uses black crosshairs lightly outlined in chrome. It's easy to spot for its distinctive 10-spoke alloy wheels, black headlight background and go-fast slash stripes on the front fenders. The body-colored outline of the black crosshair on the r/t grille helps.  the new blacktop package applies the look of the r/t to the sxt, minus the tape stripes and substituting unique black-painted alloy wheels. Most cars in the mid-size class are trying to look like sleek luxury sedans, with varying degrees of success. It's not particularly exciting, but neither is it annoying, frustrating, or inconvenient, as are many cars with interiors and controls that try to do too much or be cool. The avenger is simple: everything in its correct place, and not too much of it. That alone makes driving more relaxing.  the dashboard is big and slabby, perhaps described as monolithic. The doors are well designed, with comfortable armrests, a good grab handle, door pockets, and small levers that make opening easy. The best part of the interior might be the expensive feel of the perforated leather on the steering wheel, standard on all but the base se. The worst part might be some cheap looking chrome and faux aluminum trim. An interior overhaul for 2011 improved fit and finish substantially, but the avenger's interior materials are still not best in class.  in the front seats, avenger feels a little more enclosed than the roomiest cars in its class, partly for the massive impact of the dash, but it doesn't feel confining. The fabric on the base seats is good and rugged, though a bit boring in light colors and better in black. The front seats are comfortable for cruising and long hauls, but not as supportive as they might be in corners. Those in the sporty r/t have leather bolsters, red stitching and unique, z-striped fabric inserts. The bolstering improves a bit, but the sport seats are still a bit too much like heavy, cushy barcaloungers for truly aggressive driving.  the instrument package is a nicely lit cluster of three gauges, with the largest in the center and one on either inside. All models have a tach, and a fuel/temperature package on the left, with a digital display on the bottom that allows the driver to scroll various options. On other models, the speedo stays in the center, and the problem reading the right gauge (the tach) becomes a little less crucial.  the avenger has thumb-wheel controls for cruise and audio on the steering-wheel spokes. The lights, wipers etc. On the column stalks are easy to find and operate, but the stalks themselves feel a bit more shaky or wobbly than those in some competitors. There are three big, solid, perfectly placed knobs for climate control at the bottom of the center stack. It makes for one of the easiest. 2012 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte.  but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom.  focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.'  we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written.  there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here.  interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis.  myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving.  the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension. Ah, relief. lineupthe 2012 ford focus comes in sedan and hatchback versions. All use a redesigned 2. 0-liter engine with the latest technology of variable twin camshaft valve timing and direct fuel injection. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission.  focus s sedan 16,270) is well equipped with cloth upholstery, climate control with air filtration, power door locks and front windows, full center console, 110-watt 4-speaker am/fm/cd3/mp3 sound system, fold-flat rear seat, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, 15-inch steel wheels, halogen headlamps, and black grille, mirrors and door handles. No cruise control or usb port or bluetooth, rear windows are rollup and rear brakes are drum.  focus se sedan 17,270) and hatchback 18,065) add body-color mirrors and door handles, floormats, foglamps, auto headlamps, illuminated entry, compass and temp display, steering-wheel audio controls, power rear windows, and 16-inch steel wheels. Still no cruise control, usb port or bluetooth, and rear drums. An optional sport package features firmer suspension tuning and selectshift.  focus sel sedan 20,070) and hatchback 21,065) upgrade over se with dual-zone climate control, a six-speaker sound system, 12-volt power for rear seat, piano black grille, chrome beltline trim, ambient lighting, overhead console, metallic interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 60/40 rear seats, 16-inch painted aluminum wheels, myford touch handsfree driver connect, sync elements with usb port, cruise control and rear disc brakes. The 6-speed automatic transmission includes selectshift manual operation.  focus titanium sedan 22,270) and hatchback 22,765) come loaded with a 10-speaker sony sound system with hd sirius radio, pushbutton start, 8-inch touch screen, 4-inch info display screen, sport cloth seats, sport-tuned suspension, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. There's a hatchback with premium package 24,060) that upgrades to leather upholstery with six-way power driver's seat, rain-sensing wipers, backup system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and rear armrest with storage. Options include leather seats, power moonroof, voice-activated navigation, parking technology, and special interior trim.  safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe all-new focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The new hatchback is especially aerodynamic looking. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous focus. Active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the new chevrolet cruze are doing it, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are.  but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow.  the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. 2008 chrysler aspen review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Large and luxurious, power for towing. introductionthe 2008 chrysler aspen is a big, traditional sport utility vehicle capable of towing substantial loads. The aspen is in the same class as the chevy tahoe, gmc yukon, and ford expedition, but it has more luxury amenities than most of those vehicles.  introduced for the 2007 model year, the chrysler aspen is based on the dodge durango. Aspen shares durango's size and mechanicals, the main differences being styling, interior and tuning. Both use truck chassis and engineering, giving them the advantages of a cavernous interior and the ability to tow trailers (up to 8,900 pounds).  aspen's electronic stability control system incorporates a new feature designed to control trailer sway.  two v8 engines are available, a 4. 7-liter flex-fuel v8 that gains 68 hp for 2008 for a total of 303 horsepower, and a 335-hp 5. 7-liter v8. The 4. 7-liter can run on regular gasoline or e85 (a blend of 15 percent gasoline and 85 percent ethanol). The 5. 7-liter hemi uses chrysler's multi-displacement system, which conserves fuel by shutting off half the cylinders when the engine is running under a light load. The wheel wells are filled with good-looking 18-inch alloy wheels or optional 20-inch chrome rims.  aspen accommodates seven or eight passengers, depending on the seating configuration. Three rows of seats are standard, starting with front buckets, a second-row bench and a third-row bench. Buckets are optional for the second row to reduce seating to seven.  the interior blends elegant-looking, satin-finish metallic accents with woodgrain trim on the dash and center console. The standard upholstery is chrysler's trademarked yes essentials fabric that resists stains and odors. Leather trim is optional and all of the usual power and personalization features are available.  in addition to the upgraded 4. 7-liter v8, aspen gets new safety and entertainment features for 2008. Chrysler's mygig radio, which includes a 20-gigabyte hard drive that holds songs, pictures, and navigation system map information, is available, as is a rear backup camera. lineupthe 2008 chrysler aspen is available as only the limited model. The limited 2wd 32,005) and limited awd 34,880) come standard with a 4. 7-liter v8. Chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is optional with 2wd 795) or awd 990). The popular equipment group for 2wd 1125) and awd 600) has rear obstacle detection, power-adjustable pedals, remote engine start, and running boards; the 2wd also gets the power liftgate. The popular equipment group ii 1405) has a rear dvd entertainment system, remote engine start, and chrysler's uconnect wireless cell phone link. A trailer tow group 575) adds special axle ratio (with 5. 7-liter v8), heavy-duty engine and transmission cooling, skid plates (awd), class iv trailer hitch, and a wiring harness.  chrysler's mygig entertainment system 1055) is new for 2008. It includes a 6. 5-inch touch-screen and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to hold songs and pictures. It includes sirius satellite radio, rear obstacle detection, rearview camera and uconnect. The hard-drive radio is also offered in the mygig multi-media infotainment system 950), which adds a navigation system with real time traffic and voice activation. It is only available with the quick order package, and uconnect is also included.  also available are leather upholstery 780), heated front seats 250), heated second-row bucket seats 950), a sunroof 850), rear dvd entertainment 1295), remote engine start 185), and accent-color running boards 445).  safety features include front multi-stage airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows and are programmed to activate in the event of a rollover. Missing, however, are front side airbags that protect the torso in side crashes, a feature increasingly common on cars and suvs. The second-row seats have child safety seat anchors and tethers (latch), but the third row doesn't. Traction control, which limits tire spinning in slick conditions, is standard. The electronic stability program, which attempts to keep the vehicle from spinning out, is augmented with a rollover-sensitive algorithm, which extends deployment duration, and trailer sway control, which applies individual brakes to keep the vehicle on its intended path when towing. Electronic brake-force distribution, which optimizes front-to-rear brake application in emergencies, comes standard along with brake assist, which ensures full braking performance in a panic stop. A tire-pressure monitor signals when tires are low on air. Rear obstacle detection is standard on all-wheel drive models. A. walkaroundthe chrysler aspen looks like a lot of other full-size suvs, but we found it attracted admiring looks and inquiries. Chrysler styling cues set the aspen apart from the dodge durango.  the grille, with bold crossbars and classic chrysler medallion, attempts to stake a claim for the aspen at the top of the brand's pyramid. Strangely, low-key headlamp units diminish the claim, which isn't helped by the bland bumper and generic fog lamps.  embossed strakes in the hood run back to the windshield and carry on the newest chrysler-brand styling motif. The swept-back windshield looks sleek and shows homage to aerodynamics. The optional running boards do a better job of dirtying trousers and long skirts than serving as truly functional steps. Mildly creased, visually pleasant blisters circle the wheelwell openings. A chrome-topped, overstated molding strip pulls double duty, breaking up the expanse of metal between the front and rear wheel cutouts while insulating the doors against parking lot dings. Side mirrors proudly perch on brackets extending from the base of the a-pillars (the side frames of the windshield). A slight ridge defining the beltline (where the side windows meet the lower body panels) extends beyond the base of the rear pillars, accenting the graceful outline of the rear quarter windows. A short front overhang and tucked-up lower hindquarters invite thoughts of venturing off the highway to explore an unpaved track.  it's the rear aspect of the aspen that has the most presence, the view most will have of it in traffic. A strong rear bumper with a deep, non-skid clad step cups the one-piece liftgate. Chrome-like trim on the bumper's end caps tie into the side molding strip. The medallion-and-wing treatment from the grille repeats above the stylized license plate recess. Gently bowed sides and a rounded top give the back end a smaller, less massive look than the rest of the vehicle. A conservatively sized notch centered in the bumper's lower edge makes room for the optional hitch receiver and junction box. interioron first impression, the interior looks classy in its materials selection, presentation and packaging. On closer examination, however, and after some quality time spent experiencing its quirks and nuances, some of that initial luster fades.  the satin-finish metal accents and wood-like trim give the interior an elegant touch, as does the silver-ringed, old-fashioned style clock tucked into a recess in the top-center of the dash. The woodgrain looks better than it feels, however, as do the expanses of textured plastic panels, which are hard to the touch and replete with seams that pose threats of squeaks and buzzes as the miles rack up. Where there's padding, it's noticeably thin. The symmetry of shapes and simplicity of features and controls for the stereo, air conditioning and navigation systems are pluses that partially counter some of the questionable elements.  the front seats are supportive, with adequate bottom and side bol.

2008 lexus rx 350 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth, luxurious crossover suv. introductionthe lexus rx is smooth and comfortable, and it's flexible when it comes to hauling people or cargo. The rx 400h features a hybrid gas-electric powerplant.  for 2008, the changes are mainly cosmetic. The only mechanical change is the addition of a vehicle stability control cut-off switch.  the 2008 lexus rx 350 features a new front grille design and chrome door handles. Two new exterior colors are available as well as a new interior wood trim option, black bird's-eye maple, available with the light-gray interior. The rx doesn't offer the big towing capacity or off-road capability of a true truck, but an all-wheel-drive rx 350 handles gravel and snow with ease, and it can tow up to 3500 pounds with the optional trailer package.  the rx is as quiet inside as most cars. It's easy to drive and easier than most suvs to park, with light steering and responsive brakes. It's equipped with the latest in passive safety features, including seven airbags.  the rx 400h combines a gasoline-powered v6 with one high-torque electric motor-generator on the front-wheel-drive model, and two motors on the all-wheel-drive model. The gas engine can propel the car or recharge the batteries. Most of the time the rx 400h runs on a combination of the v6 and electric motors, but in certain situations it will run strictly on the v6 engine, and in others strictly with the electric motors.  emissions are extremely low, reducing the impact on the environment to something in the neighborhood of nil. The rx 400h burns about as much gas as a compact car. Yet it drives essentially the same as the rx 350. It accelerates as quickly off the line (which is quite quick), and more quickly at certain speeds. There are lots of good reasons to choose it over the standard rx 350, but not economic reasons. The rx 350 is a very efficient vehicle in its own right, and now that lexus has equipped both variants identically, the $4,000 price premium for the rx 400h pays strictly for the hybrid drivetrain.  the lexus rx 350 is well-suited for just about any assignment, from a drive along the pacific coast highway to a camping trip in the sierra nevada. It's stylish and at home in the valet line at a fancy restaurant. lineupthe 2008 lexus rx 350 is available with a choice of front-wheel drive 37,400) or permanent all-wheel drive 38,800). The rx 350 is powered by a 3. 5-liter dual-overhead-cam v6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower through a five-speed automatic transmission. The rx 400h comes standard with the same equipment as the rx 350, except its hybrid gas-electric powertrain. The premium plus package 2,060) includes the features from the premium package and adds high-intensity discharge headlamps that turn in the direction of travel.  the navigation system 2,650) with bluetooth and voice command capability includes a rear-view camera that projects an image of what's behind whenever reverse is engaged.  the navigation system with mark levinson audio 6,190) on the rx 350 starts with the premium plus package and adds 210 watts, more speakers with a subwoofer and high-tech digital sound processing. On the rx 400h, it costs less 4,130) but requires purchasing either the premium or premium plus package. The mark levinson audio system is available as a stand-alone option on the rx 400h 980).  a heated-seat package 665) comes with rain-sensing wipers and headlight washers. The tow prep 160) package includes a transmission cooler, heavy-duty alternator and larger radiator. Other options include a rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1,740 for the rx 350; $1,840 for the rx 400h), laser-managed dynamic cruise control 600), and hid headlamps 815). Xm and sirius satellite radio are offered as a dealer-installed option.  a few options are available on only the rx 350: the giant multi-panel sunroof 2,840) comes packaged with features from the premium package. The performance package 4,055) includes all of the items in the premium plus package, plus 18-inch graphite-colored aluminum alloy wheels with wider tires, height-adjustable air suspension, sequential-shifting transmission, and rain-sensing wipers. Heated front seats 540) can be ordered as a stand-alone option.  safety features that come standard include the mandated front airbags, plus a smaller airbag to protect the driver's knees. Front passengers get side-impact airbags for torso protection, while the curtain-style head protection airbags span both rows and deploy to offer head protection if the vehicle senses the possibility of a rollover. Advanced abs, traction control and electronic stability control come standard. walkaroundthe lexus rx is based on a modified version of the same platform used by the toyota camry and lexus es 350 sedans.  the current lexus rx models build on the style set by the original rx 300. The headlights also feature an adaptive front lighting system, which uses an on-board processor to calculate the optimum angle to illuminate a turn then swivels the headlamp closest to the turn accordingly, allowing the driver to see better around corners.  the beefy front bumper and pronounced fender flares are designed to suggest the rugged, off-pavement expected in an suv. Among them: a front bumper and grille designed to allow more air into the rx 400h engine bay for more cooling and tail lamps with leds instead of traditional incandescent bulbs.  for 2008, there are a few tweaks to the appearance of both models, with a new front grille design for the rx 350, a new grille finish for the 400h, and chrome door handles on both. The 400h models without a towing package sport a blue hybrid badge on the front, and the rear spoiler is color-keyed.  the rx 400h is also available with the 18-inch wheels and tires offered on the rx 350, and it says something about the thinking behind the hybrid. Lexus could have used hard, low-grip tires that reduce rolling resistance and further improve fuel economy, but chose to enhance handling instead.  the 400h hybrid powertrain adds less than 300 pounds to the curb weight and that's an impressive engineering achievement, given the powerful motors and batteries. They're all placed low in the vehicle, so they don't substantially raise the center of gravity or affect handling. It's luxurious and inviting. The optional leather upholstery is luxuriously soft and slightly bunched.  the rx 3. 2011 kia optima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new midsize sedan is quiet and refined. introductionsomebody please tell the koreans to slow down!  not that it would help. As other world carmakers stroll along at their customary dignified pace, kia and hyundai continue to lunge forward by leaps and bounds. What takes the others six or seven years to accomplish, korea does in half the time. The rate of improvement in korean cars is almost alarming. The fine hyundai genesis luxury/performance vehicles are one instance. And now kia joins in with its all-new 2011 optima. Aimed at the fast-growing mid-size family sedan segment, this is a car of startling finesse, offered at a seductive korean sticker price.  one look at the new, 2011 kia optima confirms its distinguished aesthetics. They are at the very forefront of contemporary design, sleek, muscular, with none of the odd feel that sometimes characterizes new asian cars. This is a family sedan that will earn its place in the american driveway.  the optima's interior appointments and materials are handsome, generous, first-quality in every respect. Legible, pleasingly jewel-like instruments reconfirm that this is no mindless commuter module. The expected provisions are all present, plus one or two bonus conveniences. Connectivity conveniences include satellite radio, usb audio input jacks and bluetooth wireless, with steering wheel voice activation controls that deliver hands-free phone operation.  the optima's over-the-road characteristics are similarly enlightened. The ride is nicely compliant over rougher pavement, yet the suspension accurately communicates all road-surface information, keeping the driver fully informed. This engine, while less than exciting, proved entirely satisfactory for normal driving. Subsequently added is a somewhat more powerful 274-hp 2. 0-liter turbo optima. Standard features include cloth seat trim, air conditioning, solar glass, outside mirror turn signals, am/fm/cd/mp3 with satellite radio, usb input jacks, glass antenna, dual dash power takeoffs, cooling glovebox, front/rear armrest and cupholder, sunglasses holder, front/rear in-door bottle holder, illuminated vanity mirror, tilt/telescope steering, steering-wheel controls, keyless entry, power windows with driver auto down, intermittent wipers, driver's power lumbar support, up/down tilt headrests, 16-inch wheels with 205/65r16 tires. A convenience package 600) upgrades to an eight-way power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror with homelink and compass. The lx technology package 2,700) includes the convenience package and adds the navigation system with rearview camera, infinity premium audio, and dual-zone climate control.  optima ex 2. 4 22,495) adds foglights, heated outside mirrors, exterior chrome/body-color door handles, glovebox illumination, smart key wtih push-button start, auto light control system, 17-inch alloy wheels with p215/55r17 tires. Technology package ex 2. 0t with premium package 2,000) adds the navigation system, rearview camera, infinity premium audio.  optima sx 2. 0t 25,995) features a sport-tuned suspension, p225/45r18 tires, 18-inch black machined wheels, black front-brake calipers, hid headlights with auto leveling, led rear lights, unique front/rear bumper design, sculpted side sills, spoiler, aero wiper blades. Optional safety features include the rearview camera. walkaroundkia corporate officials refer to the 2011 optima as a paradigm shift for the company, and truly it is. This is a bold, fresh prism through which to view the kia image. As with the recently redesigned kia sorento and the quirky, good-natured kia soul, the new optima's design focus is no longer korean nor even asian. It is a world car as surely as are the latest mid-sized sedans from ford, toyota or honda. Sleek, aggressive and modern, the optima requires no visual translation. It is immediately at ease.  in the longer/lower/wider department, the optima is three inches longer, its length is two inches greater, and it is one inch lower and one inch wider than the previous model. The mesh grille is a keynote taken directly from the more exotic models of jaguar, aston martin, bentley and others. A dramatic low front air dam gives the nose an aggressive look, while also contributing to better fuel mileage. The headlight complex is wraparound and racy, in contemporary practice, a major design element, and the broad wheelbase and low stance imply willing athleticism.  big wheel flares give additional muscularity to the optima's flanks, and its bright silver wheels, available in several patterns and sizes, are cutting edge. The sides of the car are exceptionally clean, with just three horizontal character lines giving them form and flow. At the rear, wraparound red taillights complete the dynamic, sporty look, with dual chrome exhausts, one at each side, fulfilling the sporty image. Still, the imagery is enticing. interiorthe interior of the new optima has the look and feel of a finely appointed european sedan. The instruments are completely free of look-at-me gimmickry. They use a clean, crisp adults-only font. The controls on the center console are angled ten degrees towards the driver, facilitating operating them with a minimum of distraction. A digital dashboard computer delivers information like instant fuel mileage, fuel range and outside temperature.  the optima steering wheel tilts and telescopes and is jam-packed with controls for audio, cruise control, phone and eco setting. (the latter optimizes fuel mileage by adjusting the transmission's shift schedule.) the gearshift lever has black wood trim with silver flakes dusted into the surface, a luxury touch that we found only mildly winsome. The prnd gearshift positions are on the far side of the transmission tunnel, with the manual shifter located closest to the driver.  five-passenger seating is excellent, with a full range of adjustability available in the driver's seat. The seats are firm, well-bolstered, and deliver snug lateral support for more vigorous driving. Heated front and rear seating is available, as is front-seat cooling. 2008 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Great suv for big-family expeditions. introductiontrue expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the ford expedition can tow any of these.  after redesigning the expedition for 2007 while also lowering the price, ford adds a new top end king ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards.  the expedition is meant for utility, not posing. It carries people, hauls gear, tows boats, and pulls campers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. Due to that size, however, the expedition is prone to lean in turns and is not easy to maneuver in close quarters.  with its combination of utility, a smooth, stable ride and a pleasant interior, the 2008 ford expedition is a fine choice for families that tow boats and take driving vacations. lineupthe 2008 ford expedition comes in two lengths, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v-8 that is rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A tilt steering wheel (leather-wrapped for 2008), front and rear air conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, alarm and an am/fm/cd stereo with mp3 player connectivity and rear controls are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r17 tires on alloy wheels, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable outside mirrors (now heated), and a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system. Also added as standard for 2008 are keyless entry keypad, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead console, and illuminated visors. An off-road package 200) for 4wd xlts has tubular side steps and skid plates.  the eddie bauer 35,865) and eddie bauer 4wd 38,675) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique power-folding split third-row seat. Other standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, memory for the mirrors and driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, an am/fm stereo tuner with 6cd changer, trip computer, conversation mirror, mirror-mounted turn signals, and protective cladding for the lower body panels. The eddie bauer el 38,515) and eddie bauer el 4wd 41,415) are equipped like the standard wheelbase versions but have front tow hooks and 255/70r18 tires instead of 17s.  options for eddie bauer models over and above those of the xlt include heated and cooled front seats 625), new-for-2008 power running boards 995), power rear liftgate 495), a navigation system 1295), rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1995), the new rear backup camera 455), and p275/55r20 tires.  the limited 38,025) and limited 4wd 40,925) add heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, universal garage door opener, power rear quarter windows, power-adjustable pedals, and 255/70r18 tires on chrome alloy wheels. The limited el 40,675) and limited el 4wd 43,575) are equipped the same but also have front tow hooks.  the new king ranch 39,965) and king ranch 4wd 42,865) have upgraded chaparral leather upholstery, king ran. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition use many of the components from the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, chassis technology that improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess.  this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish. The expedition doesn't have the style of gm's sport-utilities, but at least it avoids the science-fiction look of the nissan armada.  expedition el models stretch the wheelbase by a foot to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 24 cubic feet of cargo volume, an increase from 108. 3 to 130. 8 cubic feet behind the front seats.  both the standard expedition and the expedition el are big vehicles, measuring more than 17 feet from nose to tail. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet.  they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs 5578 pounds, while the base 2wd el tips the scales at 5825 pounds. The addition of 4wd adds another 235 pounds to the bottom line.  the new king ranch model can be identified by its gold exterior accents and unique wheel design.  the expedition comes with running boards as standard equipment. For 2008, power retractable running boards that deploy when the doors are opened are an option. interiorthe 2008 ford expedition features a rich blend of finishes, textures and color. Indeed, a fully optioned expedition king ranch is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road. Leather-upholstered examples are available with a heating/cooling feature that makes them a more comfortable companion in winter and summer. Generous driver's seat travel helps accommodate taller drivers, and it's a perfect match for the expedition's movable pedals, so a wide range of drivers can be sit comfortably.  the second seating row also reflects ford's thoughtful approach to passenger comfort, as the standard 40/20/40 bench seat incorporates a center section that slides forward up to eleven inches, bringing a child seat within easier reach of front-seat passengers. Optional second-row captain's chairs with a center-aisle pass-through can be substituted for adult-rated comfort.  packaging advantages afforded by the expedition's independent rear suspension enable the third-row seat to deliver more comfort for adults compared to the accommodations provided by the chevy tahoe. In fact, third-row room is among the best of any suv, though three adults won't want to sit in the back for long. The high ride height also makes getting in and out a task for children.  the expedition's liftgate with its flip-up glass hatch makes access to the cargo area very easy. The expedition's second- and third-row bench-type seats fold flat into the cargo floor, affording a long cargo area that can be easily loaded. In this regard, the expedition is much better designed than gm's large suvs. The expedition is also available with an optional power-folding third-row seat and electronically powered liftgate to make it even easier to load cargo. However, the seat cushions of the second- and third-row seats are a little slim in order to allow the seats to fold properly.  the expedition is about more than convenience. A dvd-based navigation system with sizable 6. 5-inch screen is available as an option.
