Smooth, luxurious crossover suv. introductionthe lexus rx is smooth and comfortable, and it's flexible when it comes to hauling people or cargo. The rx 400h features a hybrid gas-electric powerplant. for 2008, the changes are mainly cosmetic. The only mechanical change is the addition of a vehicle stability control cut-off switch. the 2008 lexus rx 350 features a new front grille design and chrome door handles. Two new exterior colors are available as well as a new interior wood trim option, black bird's-eye maple, available with the light-gray interior. The rx doesn't offer the big towing capacity or off-road capability of a true truck, but an all-wheel-drive rx 350 handles gravel and snow with ease, and it can tow up to 3500 pounds with the optional trailer package. the rx is as quiet inside as most cars. It's easy to drive and easier than most suvs to park, with light steering and responsive brakes. It's equipped with the latest in passive safety features, including seven airbags. the rx 400h combines a gasoline-powered v6 with one high-torque electric motor-generator on the front-wheel-drive model, and two motors on the all-wheel-drive model. What takes the others six or seven years to accomplish, korea does in half the time. The rate of improvement in korean cars is almost alarming. The fine hyundai genesis luxury/performance vehicles are one instance. And now kia joins in with its all-new 2011 optima. Aimed at the fast-growing mid-size family sedan segment, this is a car of startling finesse, offered at a seductive korean sticker price. one look at the new, 2011 kia optima confirms its distinguished aesthetics. They are at the very forefront of contemporary design, sleek, muscular, with none of the odd feel that sometimes characterizes new asian cars. This is a family sedan that will earn its place in the american driveway. the optima's interior appointments and materials are handsome, generous, first-quality in every respect. Legible, pleasingly jewel-like instruments reconfirm that this is no mindless commuter module. The expected provisions are all present, plus one or two bonus conveniences. Connectivity conveniences include satellite radio, usb audio input jacks and bluetooth wireless, with steering wheel voice activation controls that deliver hands-free phone operation. the optima's over-the-road characteristics are similarly enlightened. This is a bold, fresh prism through which to view the kia image. As with the recently redesigned kia sorento and the quirky, good-natured kia soul, the new optima's design focus is no longer korean nor even asian. It is a world car as surely as are the latest mid-sized sedans from ford, toyota or honda. Sleek, aggressive and modern, the optima requires no visual translation. It is immediately at ease. in the longer/lower/wider department, the optima is three inches longer, its length is two inches greater, and it is one inch lower and one inch wider than the previous model. The mesh grille is a keynote taken directly from the more exotic models of jaguar, aston martin, bentley and others. A dramatic low front air dam gives the nose an aggressive look, while also contributing to better fuel mileage. The headlight complex is wraparound and racy, in contemporary practice, a major design element, and the broad wheelbase and low stance imply willing athleticism. big wheel flares give additional muscularity to the optima's flanks, and its bright silver wheels, available in several patterns and sizes, are cutting edge. The sides of the car are exceptionally clean, with just three horizontal character lines giving them form and flow. At the rear, wraparound red taillights complete the dynamic, sporty look, with dual chrome exhausts, one at each side, fulfilling the sporty image. Still, the imagery is enticing. interiorthe interior of the new optima has the look and feel of a finely appointed european sedan. The instruments are completely free of look-at-me gimmickry. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, chassis technology that improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess. this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish. The expedition doesn't have the style of gm's sport-utilities, but at least it avoids the science-fiction look of the nissan armada. expedition el models stretch the wheelbase by a foot to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 24 cubic feet of cargo volume, an increase from 108. 3 to 130. 8 cubic feet behind the front seats. both the standard expedition and the expedition el are big vehicles, measuring more than 17 feet from nose to tail. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet. they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs 5578 pounds, while the base 2wd el tips the scales at 5825 pounds. During los angeles morning rush, we drove the fusion hybrid in heavy traffic from the sunset strip 10 miles west along hilly, snaking sunset boulevard to the beach, then south to santa monica pier, all the while proceeding at a distinctly non-funereal pace. The combined horsepower of the hybrid's gas engine and electric motor is 191 hp, but the literally instantaneous torque of its forceful electric motor makes it feel like more. most of the new fusion's dimensions are unchanged from the previous model, but mechanically and in styling, the 2010 model exhibits vastly more than a mere freshening of last year's model. The new exterior, nicely enhanced with chrome, has a muscular, crisp euro panache that is, if anything, pleasingly saab-like. the various gas-engine 2010 fusion models we drove are similarly comfortable, commodious, and in the case of the sport model, excitingly agile. A six-speed automatic is optional. fusion se 20,545) adds six-speaker audio, fog lamps, fold-flat passenger seat, body-color mirrors, six-way power driver seat, sirius satellite radio, steering wheel audio and cruise controls, illuminated visor mirrors, and 17-inch wheels. A six-speed select-shift automatic is optional. How long has it been since the mainstream american mid-size elicited that? the fusion's sinuousness is continued in the carefully raised modeling of the hood, implying that what lies beneath is something genuinely worthy. The fusion is no dragster, but its performance is spirited, and its 7. 0-second 0-to-60 time in the sport model gives it the edge over the honda accord (7. 4 seconds) and toyota camry (7. 1 seconds). given the conservative looks of the honda and toyota, the fusion's styling makes a statement all its own. Avenger carries over to 2013 unchanged. dodge calls the avenger america's most affordable mid-size sedan, and based on current retail prices, we can't disagree. Yet the avenger isn't just selling price. We might call it a mid-size package with compact value. the 2008 avenger appeared looking like a scaled-down version of the hot-selling, full-size dodge charger. Since then, the charger has moved on to a new look, while the avenger has remained mostly unchanged. It's still clean, tightly creased and not bad looking, but without the more dramatic proportions of the bigger car it doesn't stand out. Its basic visual impact is retrograde. the cabin contributes to a relaxing, pleasant driving experience. The black egg-crate grille adds visual interest. the crosshair grille is a dodge trademark, and the avenger uses black crosshairs lightly outlined in chrome. It's easy to spot for its distinctive 10-spoke alloy wheels, black headlight background and go-fast slash stripes on the front fenders. The body-colored outline of the black crosshair on the r/t grille helps. the new blacktop package applies the look of the r/t to the sxt, minus the tape stripes and substituting unique black-painted alloy wheels. Most cars in the mid-size class are trying to look like sleek luxury sedans, with varying degrees of success. It's not particularly exciting, but neither is it annoying, frustrating, or inconvenient, as are many cars with interiors and controls that try to do too much or be cool. The avenger is simple: everything in its correct place, and not too much of it. That alone makes driving more relaxing. the dashboard is big and slabby, perhaps described as monolithic. The doors are well designed, with comfortable armrests, a good grab handle, door pockets, and small levers that make opening easy. The best part of the interior might be the expensive feel of the perforated leather on the steering wheel, standard on all but the base se. The worst part might be some cheap looking chrome and faux aluminum trim. An interior overhaul for 2011 improved fit and finish substantially, but the avenger's interior materials are still not best in class. in the front seats, avenger feels a little more enclosed than the roomiest cars in its class, partly for the massive impact of the dash, but it doesn't feel confining. The fabric on the base seats is good and rugged, though a bit boring in light colors and better in black. The front seats are comfortable for cruising and long hauls, but not as supportive as they might be in corners. Those in the sporty r/t have leather bolsters, red stitching and unique, z-striped fabric inserts. The bolstering improves a bit, but the sport seats are still a bit too much like heavy, cushy barcaloungers for truly aggressive driving. the instrument package is a nicely lit cluster of three gauges, with the largest in the center and one on either inside. All models have a tach, and a fuel/temperature package on the left, with a digital display on the bottom that allows the driver to scroll various options. On other models, the speedo stays in the center, and the problem reading the right gauge (the tach) becomes a little less crucial. the avenger has thumb-wheel controls for cruise and audio on the steering-wheel spokes. The lights, wipers etc. On the column stalks are easy to find and operate, but the stalks themselves feel a bit more shaky or wobbly than those in some competitors. There are three big, solid, perfectly placed knobs for climate control at the bottom of the center stack. It makes for one of the easiest.
