2009 chevrolet traverse review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sensible new alternative to the traditional suv. introductionthe chevrolet traverse is one of a new generation of large crossover suvs making big, clunky, truck-based suvs practically obsolete, at least when it comes to moving people and cargo. More stylish than minivans and far more fuel and space efficient than truck-based suvs, crossovers like the traverse are excellent family vehicles.  the chevy traverse shares its powertrain and platform with the buick enclave, gmc acadia and saturn outlook. It handles a more like a family sedan than a chevy tahoe. The steering is direct and responsive, if light, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The ride is comfortable and much more stable than that of large suvs, which can often bound and lean. The traverse is large, though, so it can be bulky in parking lot and parallel parking maneuvers.  power is more than adequate. The traverse comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 that moves it ably from a stop and provides decent passing punch. It makes 281 horsepower or 288 with the available dual exhaust system. The traverse comes standard with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Given the traverse's spacious interior and eight-passenger capacity, the fuel economy is quite good. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to open up a generous cargo area. Even with all the seats up, there is enough room behind the third row for a week's worth of groceries. And an available power liftgate makes it easy to access those groceries.  the controls are easy to reach and operate. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. Room in the first and second rows is plentiful, and the third row is bigger than most and is even useful for adults. It's much more pleasant to drive than those vehicles, thanks to dramatically improved ride and handling. Plus, it gets better mileage and is more space efficient on the inside. In short, the chevy traverse is an excellent family vehicle. lineupthe 2009 chevrolet traverse is offered in ls, lt (1lt, 2lt), and ltz trim levels, each with front-wheel drive (2wd) or all-wheel drive (awd). Ls and lt models have a 281-horsepower 3. 6-liter v6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Other options include a cargo convenience package 130) with a rear cargo cover and cargo net; a trailering package 495) with a heavy-duty engine cooler and a trailer hitch; a two-panel sunroof 1400) with a fixed rear panel; a dvd rear entertainment system 2355 for 1lt, $1470 for 2lt, $1295 for ltz) that includes the bose sound system, rear audio controls, and a 110-volt outlet; a dual-screen rear dvd entertainment system 1930); a second-row center console 300); side steps 630); and a roof rack 210).  safety features include dual front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitor, traction control and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are optional. walkaroundchevrolet says the traverse is a midsize crossover suv, but it's bigger than even its midsize truck-based competitors and is only slightly shorter than a chevy tahoe full-size suv.  the traverse shares its architecture with the buick enclave, gmc acadia, and saturn outlook, and they're all based on gm's lambda platform.  though large, the traverse trades the bold and upright looks of traditional truck-based suvs for a softer, sleeker, more modern look.  up front, the traverse features an attractive version of chevrolet's split grille. The headlights start next to the grille and wrap around the front fenders. Horizontal fog lights mirror the headlights about six inches lower. A black air dam below the grille gives the front end a dark lower face. A peak at the center of the hood continues down through the grille and fascia, adding a touch of character.  from the side, the traverse appears to have short overhangs for an suv. The window line rises to the rear and that angle increases at the rear windows. A character line is located about a third of the way up each door, and the black front fascia is picked up along the sides by black plastic over the rocker panels. Large wheels and tires keep everything in proportion. Up top, the traverse has black roof rails and an available two-panel sunroof with a fixed rear panel and an opening front panel.  at the rear, the traverse features dark tailgate glass that dips down toward the center. The tailgate lifts up and does not have separate opening glass. The center peak from the front is repeated here, as is the black lower fascia treatment. The total design is well thought out, smooth and stylish. interiorinside, the chevy traverse makes great use of its best-in-class space. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive, with lots of head and leg room.  the second-row bench seat fits three adults easily and there is plenty of head and leg room. With the second-row captain's chairs, there is a handy walkthrough to the third row. Three children can ride comfortably in the third row, and there is also enough head and leg room for two adults to fit back there. Adults won't be comfortable during long trips, though, because the seat cushions are set too low.  in terms of cargo space, the traverse has more room behind the third-row seat (19. 7 cubic feet) than in any midsize suv, and gm provides a handy, though shallow, under-floor bin. With the second and third rows folded down, cargo volume is an impressive 116. 4 cubic feet, near the top of the class and almost eight cubic feet more than in the full-size tahoe. Those two rear rows fold easily, each with the flick of a lever, creating a nearly flat load floor. A strap on each section of the split third-row bench makes it easy to pull the seatbacks upright from the tailgate area. An available power rear liftgate also eases access to the cargo area.  getting in and out is easy because the traverse sits lower than traditional truck-based suvs. Still, the driver is perched higher than in a car and therefore has a clear view of the road ahead. Visibility to the front is generally good, but the traverse is bigger than it feels, so it can be tough to see over the driver's right shoulder and objects immediately behind can hide. With this in mind, it makes sense to get the rearview camera. Not only does it add an element of safety, helping avoid the tragic mistake of backing over a child, it also proves to be highly useful in everyday parking situations, making maneuvering in tight quarters easier and quicker.  up front, the driver is surrounded by an attractively designed dashboard that has nice graining but uses more hard plastics than customers might expect for a $30,000 vehicle. The instrument cluster has two deep-set pods with electroluminescent gauges on a black background. It's easy to read and never washes o.

2013 dodge avenger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Midsize sedan is powerful, comfortable. introductionthe dodge avenger is an honest, straightforward sedan at a good price. In certain respects it's less sophisticated than some competitors, but it's powerful, comfortable and reasonably economical to operate. It's also quiet and pleasant to drive.  avenger was launched as a 2008 model. A thorough update for the 2011 model year made the avenger much more competitive in key areas. Avenger r/t joined the lineup for 2012. Avenger carries over to 2013 unchanged.  dodge calls the avenger america's most affordable mid-size sedan, and based on current retail prices, we can't disagree. Yet the avenger isn't just selling price. We might call it a mid-size package with compact value.  the 2008 avenger appeared looking like a scaled-down version of the hot-selling, full-size dodge charger. Since then, the charger has moved on to a new look, while the avenger has remained mostly unchanged. It's still clean, tightly creased and not bad looking, but without the more dramatic proportions of the bigger car it doesn't stand out. Its basic visual impact is retrograde.  the cabin contributes to a relaxing, pleasant driving experience. The quality of the interior materials isn't the best in the class, but the avenger is comfortable and the controls are intuitive and easy to use.  avenger se retails for hundreds of dollars less than the next competitive mid-size sedan, and it comes well equipped. With the 4-speed automatic transmission, the avenger se is epa-rated at 21/30 mpg city/highway. The price is thousands less than other mid-size v6s, yet it's the most powerful v6 in its class. Epa ratings are 19/29 mpg.  avenger r/t comes with the v6, a sports suspension and racy stripes and interior treatment. Loaded with navigation and the boston acoustics audio upgrade, an avenger r/t barely cracks $27,000.  the avenger chassis is shared with the chrysler 200, which was designed to be a convertible as well as a sedan, so the chassis is stiff and strong. Dodge aced the suspension, and both ride quality and cornering response are excellent, benefits of that rigid chassis. V6 is optional 1,795). Sxt options include media center with 6. 5-inch touch screen, 40gb hard-disc drive, navigation and sirius services 995); power sunroof 995); cold weather group with heated front seats and remote start 295); chromed wheels 395). A new blacktop package 595) combines a body-color grille with a black headlamp bezels, a trunk spoiler, and 18-inch black-painted aluminum wheels.  avenger r/t 25,495) is the sport model, with the v6, firmer suspension, leather-bolstered sport seats and unique graphics inside and out. It also comes with foglights, the cold weather package, the media center, boston acoustics audio, and other goodies. However, it does not stand out and gets lost among all the mid-size sedans.  avenger's shape suggests the 2006-10 charger, especially at the hips and roofline, but doesn't inspire like the charger does. Its clean look is emphasized by the lack of cladding or ding strips on the sides and body-colored door handles and mirrors (except on the base se). The bumpers, front and rear, are smooth. The black egg-crate grille adds visual interest.  the crosshair grille is a dodge trademark, and the avenger uses black crosshairs lightly outlined in chrome. It's easy to spot for its distinctive 10-spoke alloy wheels, black headlight background and go-fast slash stripes on the front fenders. The body-colored outline of the black crosshair on the r/t grille helps.  the new blacktop package applies the look of the r/t to the sxt, minus the tape stripes and substituting unique black-painted alloy wheels. Most cars in the mid-size class are trying to look like sleek luxury sedans, with varying degrees of success. It's not particularly exciting, but neither is it annoying, frustrating, or inconvenient, as are many cars with interiors and controls that try to do too much or be cool. The avenger is simple: everything in its correct place, and not too much of it. That alone makes driving more relaxing.  the dashboard is big and slabby, perhaps described as monolithic. The doors are well designed, with comfortable armrests, a good grab handle, door pockets, and small levers that make opening easy. The best part of the interior might be the expensive feel of the perforated leather on the steering wheel, standard on all but the base se. The worst part might be some cheap looking chrome and faux aluminum trim. An interior overhaul for 2011 improved fit and finish substantially, but the avenger's interior materials are still not best in class.  in the front seats, avenger feels a little more enclosed than the roomiest cars in its class, partly for the massive impact of the dash, but it doesn't feel confining. The fabric on the base seats is good and rugged, though a bit boring in light colors and better in black. The front seats are comfortable for cruising and long hauls, but not as supportive as they might be in corners. Those in the sporty r/t have leather bolsters, red stitching and unique, z-striped fabric inserts. The bolstering improves a bit, but the sport seats are still a bit too much like heavy, cushy barcaloungers for truly aggressive driving.  the instrument package is a nicely lit cluster of three gauges, with the largest in the center and one on either inside. All models have a tach, and a fuel/temperature package on the left, with a digital display on the bottom that allows the driver to scroll various options. On other models, the speedo stays in the center, and the problem reading the right gauge (the tach) becomes a little less crucial.  the avenger has thumb-wheel controls for cruise and audio on the steering-wheel spokes. The lights, wipers etc. On the column stalks are easy to find and operate, but the stalks themselves feel a bit more shaky or wobbly than those in some competitors. There are three big, solid, perfectly placed knobs for climate control at the bottom of the center stack. It makes for one of the easiest. 2012 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte.  but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom.  focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.'  we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written.  there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here.  interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis.  myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving.  the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension. Ah, relief. lineupthe 2012 ford focus comes in sedan and hatchback versions. All use a redesigned 2. 0-liter engine with the latest technology of variable twin camshaft valve timing and direct fuel injection. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission.  focus s sedan 16,270) is well equipped with cloth upholstery, climate control with air filtration, power door locks and front windows, full center console, 110-watt 4-speaker am/fm/cd3/mp3 sound system, fold-flat rear seat, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, 15-inch steel wheels, halogen headlamps, and black grille, mirrors and door handles. No cruise control or usb port or bluetooth, rear windows are rollup and rear brakes are drum.  focus se sedan 17,270) and hatchback 18,065) add body-color mirrors and door handles, floormats, foglamps, auto headlamps, illuminated entry, compass and temp display, steering-wheel audio controls, power rear windows, and 16-inch steel wheels. Still no cruise control, usb port or bluetooth, and rear drums. An optional sport package features firmer suspension tuning and selectshift.  focus sel sedan 20,070) and hatchback 21,065) upgrade over se with dual-zone climate control, a six-speaker sound system, 12-volt power for rear seat, piano black grille, chrome beltline trim, ambient lighting, overhead console, metallic interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 60/40 rear seats, 16-inch painted aluminum wheels, myford touch handsfree driver connect, sync elements with usb port, cruise control and rear disc brakes. The 6-speed automatic transmission includes selectshift manual operation.  focus titanium sedan 22,270) and hatchback 22,765) come loaded with a 10-speaker sony sound system with hd sirius radio, pushbutton start, 8-inch touch screen, 4-inch info display screen, sport cloth seats, sport-tuned suspension, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. There's a hatchback with premium package 24,060) that upgrades to leather upholstery with six-way power driver's seat, rain-sensing wipers, backup system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and rear armrest with storage. Options include leather seats, power moonroof, voice-activated navigation, parking technology, and special interior trim.  safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe all-new focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The new hatchback is especially aerodynamic looking. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous focus. Active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the new chevrolet cruze are doing it, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are.  but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow.  the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. 2008 chrysler aspen review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Large and luxurious, power for towing. introductionthe 2008 chrysler aspen is a big, traditional sport utility vehicle capable of towing substantial loads. The aspen is in the same class as the chevy tahoe, gmc yukon, and ford expedition, but it has more luxury amenities than most of those vehicles.  introduced for the 2007 model year, the chrysler aspen is based on the dodge durango. Aspen shares durango's size and mechanicals, the main differences being styling, interior and tuning. Both use truck chassis and engineering, giving them the advantages of a cavernous interior and the ability to tow trailers (up to 8,900 pounds).  aspen's electronic stability control system incorporates a new feature designed to control trailer sway.  two v8 engines are available, a 4. 7-liter flex-fuel v8 that gains 68 hp for 2008 for a total of 303 horsepower, and a 335-hp 5. 7-liter v8. The 4. 7-liter can run on regular gasoline or e85 (a blend of 15 percent gasoline and 85 percent ethanol). The 5. 7-liter hemi uses chrysler's multi-displacement system, which conserves fuel by shutting off half the cylinders when the engine is running under a light load. The wheel wells are filled with good-looking 18-inch alloy wheels or optional 20-inch chrome rims.  aspen accommodates seven or eight passengers, depending on the seating configuration. Three rows of seats are standard, starting with front buckets, a second-row bench and a third-row bench. Buckets are optional for the second row to reduce seating to seven.  the interior blends elegant-looking, satin-finish metallic accents with woodgrain trim on the dash and center console. The standard upholstery is chrysler's trademarked yes essentials fabric that resists stains and odors. Leather trim is optional and all of the usual power and personalization features are available.  in addition to the upgraded 4. 7-liter v8, aspen gets new safety and entertainment features for 2008. Chrysler's mygig radio, which includes a 20-gigabyte hard drive that holds songs, pictures, and navigation system map information, is available, as is a rear backup camera. lineupthe 2008 chrysler aspen is available as only the limited model. The limited 2wd 32,005) and limited awd 34,880) come standard with a 4. 7-liter v8. Chrysler's 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is optional with 2wd 795) or awd 990). The popular equipment group for 2wd 1125) and awd 600) has rear obstacle detection, power-adjustable pedals, remote engine start, and running boards; the 2wd also gets the power liftgate. The popular equipment group ii 1405) has a rear dvd entertainment system, remote engine start, and chrysler's uconnect wireless cell phone link. A trailer tow group 575) adds special axle ratio (with 5. 7-liter v8), heavy-duty engine and transmission cooling, skid plates (awd), class iv trailer hitch, and a wiring harness.  chrysler's mygig entertainment system 1055) is new for 2008. It includes a 6. 5-inch touch-screen and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to hold songs and pictures. It includes sirius satellite radio, rear obstacle detection, rearview camera and uconnect. The hard-drive radio is also offered in the mygig multi-media infotainment system 950), which adds a navigation system with real time traffic and voice activation. It is only available with the quick order package, and uconnect is also included.  also available are leather upholstery 780), heated front seats 250), heated second-row bucket seats 950), a sunroof 850), rear dvd entertainment 1295), remote engine start 185), and accent-color running boards 445).  safety features include front multi-stage airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows and are programmed to activate in the event of a rollover. Missing, however, are front side airbags that protect the torso in side crashes, a feature increasingly common on cars and suvs. The second-row seats have child safety seat anchors and tethers (latch), but the third row doesn't. Traction control, which limits tire spinning in slick conditions, is standard. The electronic stability program, which attempts to keep the vehicle from spinning out, is augmented with a rollover-sensitive algorithm, which extends deployment duration, and trailer sway control, which applies individual brakes to keep the vehicle on its intended path when towing. Electronic brake-force distribution, which optimizes front-to-rear brake application in emergencies, comes standard along with brake assist, which ensures full braking performance in a panic stop. A tire-pressure monitor signals when tires are low on air. Rear obstacle detection is standard on all-wheel drive models. A. walkaroundthe chrysler aspen looks like a lot of other full-size suvs, but we found it attracted admiring looks and inquiries. Chrysler styling cues set the aspen apart from the dodge durango.  the grille, with bold crossbars and classic chrysler medallion, attempts to stake a claim for the aspen at the top of the brand's pyramid. Strangely, low-key headlamp units diminish the claim, which isn't helped by the bland bumper and generic fog lamps.  embossed strakes in the hood run back to the windshield and carry on the newest chrysler-brand styling motif. The swept-back windshield looks sleek and shows homage to aerodynamics. The optional running boards do a better job of dirtying trousers and long skirts than serving as truly functional steps. Mildly creased, visually pleasant blisters circle the wheelwell openings. A chrome-topped, overstated molding strip pulls double duty, breaking up the expanse of metal between the front and rear wheel cutouts while insulating the doors against parking lot dings. Side mirrors proudly perch on brackets extending from the base of the a-pillars (the side frames of the windshield). A slight ridge defining the beltline (where the side windows meet the lower body panels) extends beyond the base of the rear pillars, accenting the graceful outline of the rear quarter windows. A short front overhang and tucked-up lower hindquarters invite thoughts of venturing off the highway to explore an unpaved track.  it's the rear aspect of the aspen that has the most presence, the view most will have of it in traffic. A strong rear bumper with a deep, non-skid clad step cups the one-piece liftgate. Chrome-like trim on the bumper's end caps tie into the side molding strip. The medallion-and-wing treatment from the grille repeats above the stylized license plate recess. Gently bowed sides and a rounded top give the back end a smaller, less massive look than the rest of the vehicle. A conservatively sized notch centered in the bumper's lower edge makes room for the optional hitch receiver and junction box. interioron first impression, the interior looks classy in its materials selection, presentation and packaging. On closer examination, however, and after some quality time spent experiencing its quirks and nuances, some of that initial luster fades.  the satin-finish metal accents and wood-like trim give the interior an elegant touch, as does the silver-ringed, old-fashioned style clock tucked into a recess in the top-center of the dash. The woodgrain looks better than it feels, however, as do the expanses of textured plastic panels, which are hard to the touch and replete with seams that pose threats of squeaks and buzzes as the miles rack up. Where there's padding, it's noticeably thin. The symmetry of shapes and simplicity of features and controls for the stereo, air conditioning and navigation systems are pluses that partially counter some of the questionable elements.  the front seats are supportive, with adequate bottom and side bol.
